Eltz

Above the Moselle lies the Elz

Up above the Moselle is a castle Kathy missed in her earlier tour.

Burg Eltz - An amazing cathedral - a Burgruine

About Burg Eltz and beyond....

Kathy wasn’t able to get to this castle when she was younger and touring the Moselle via boat. Burg Eltz is up above the Moselle on the Elz River, and you cannot easily get to it from the Moselle below. It is a fairy-tale castle that Kathy enjoys much more than Neuschwanstein. It has been in family hands since the 12th century and has not been destroyed by wars. It is on top of a switchback in the river which affords great views of the outside of the castle. It was constructed by three branches of the Eltz family and the castle is divided into 3 separate living sections. The tour was quite fun although you cannot take pictures on the tour. We bought the postcard series of the rooms, but since they are copyrighted, we will not post them here. It was a great morning. In the afternoon, we leisurely drove back to Simmern and discovered another castle and an amazing church. Stiftskirche St Martin and St Severus is an amazing cathedral in the small town of Muenstermaifeld just about 10km from Burg Eltz. One side looks like a castle and the other a cathedral and it is huge! After a quick walk around it, we were off to the hotel and stopped at a burg ruine in Kastellaun. Again, open to the public at no cost, it is a great example of an arrested ruin. It is stabilized in its present state and used for archery, concerts, a small museum, and a Gasthaus.
